Jammu agitation may see 100,000 more arrested in the next several weeks – UPA Government faces real challenge
Shekhar Pundit
Aug. 17, 2008

PM Manmohan Singh underestimated the will of the Hindus in Jammu. For the first time Jammu is telling India to treat Kashimiri Hindus with respect.

The Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti, leading the agitation demanding restoration of land to the Amarnath shrine management, has announced plans to intensify protests from Monday.

The Samiti Sunday gave a call for people to court arrests as, it said, both the central and the Jammu and Kashmir governments have failed to pay heed to its demand.

On Monday, the Samiti's male supporters will demonstrate and court arrest, followed by women Tuesday and children Wednesday, Brig. Suchet Singh, a senior Samiti leader, told a press conference here.

"Terming the situation in the Kashmir Valley as grim and out of control, the Shree Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti has lambasted both the state and central governments for maintaining a criminal silence over misdeeds of fanatic and fundamentalist forces who have let loose a reign of terror in the Valley and are threatening the non-Kashmir people," he said.
