What really happened when Milorad Cavic was beaten by 0.01 seconds by American Michael Phelps – the touch screen dilemma?

Aug. 16, 2008

All the visuals are quite clear - Milorad Cavic reached before Michael Phelps in the men's 100 metres butterfly final on Saturday. But the touch pad sensor registered a win for Phelps by 0.01 seconds.

A Serbian protest over the result of the men's 100 metres butterfly final Saturday, when Milorad Cavic was beaten by 0.01 seconds by American Michael Phelps, was rejected by the sport's governing body, FINA.

Even the mother of Michael Phelps sat down in astonishment!

The touch screen dilemma is creating massive controversy in the Olympics.

Serb Olympic team officials believed Cavic had touched first and the timing system may have failed but Ben Ekumbo, the race referee, ruled the result should stand.

A careful computer assisted visualization shows, Milorad Cavic was definitely ahead of Michael Phelps, he reached the end first but fumbled in touching the screen.

The problem may have been lack of touch pad swimming pools in Serbia. It is not just enough to complete the race; it is the touch pad that registers the win.
