The signs were there. I never understood how corrupted and crooked Indian political system could be. I had a chance to observe the speaker of the Indian Parliament closely for two hours. I was visiting my family to Kolkata from the US. Continental Airlines took me to New Delhi. After an overnight stay I took the Indian Airlines Executive flight to Kolkata. In the plane I found Indian Parliament’s Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was traveling with a bunch of surrogates known in India as ‘Chamchas’. Mr. Chatterjee was traveling to Kolkata like a King surrounded by his Chamchas.

I was not too far from his seat. I could hear everything he and his Chamchas were saying. It was fabulous party time. There were Indian business folks going close to him and showing their traditional respect for favors. Never before I understood how powerful these Indian politicians are.

In the flight all around him were busy trying to make sure he was happy. The focus was to keep the ‘King’ happy so that political and other favors can flow positively.

Looking back, I now realize that India needs a thorough political overhaul. American legislators are running after special interests, Indian lawmakers are bathed in bribery, and raw sense of power and glory just like the ‘King of Nepal’.
